SOME QUESTIONS TO ANSWER ABOUT EDUCATION
Try to answer these questions with us. What would you say?
- Why do we have schools?
- To learn different subjects
- To follow a timetable
- To improve people
- To make a better person
- To prepare for the adult life
- to prepare for a profession
- To teach us to conform to norms and values
- of who?
- therich, elites, politicians?
- What about hidden curriculum?
- There are things that are not written on a document and nevertheless they are put into practice.
- What things?
- To conform to the norm
- To be ponctual
- To be docile
- to be more social
- As a teachers, for whom do we teach?
- For the intelligent ones, for the average people?
- How do we measure success and failure?
- With exams and certifications
- In Spain teachers give grades to students and these leads or not to a certificate.
- In Ireland, teachers only teach but don't give grades. Only state examinations are the valid ones to get a certificate.
- In this way, all students are treated equally.
- Do we classify students by levels of performance?
- In Ireland there are 4 levels:
- Higher
- Ordinary
- foundation
- Applied
- In Spain, theorically, there is no separation, but:
- In schools where there is a plurilingual modality, the brilliant students usually sign in for this education
- Students in the present PR-4 and PMAR are given a more practical education.
- In the same vein we find the students of FPB (formación profesional básica) who start these studies because they have failed in the ESO
- In private schools, there are less students with social problems.
- Why do we not achieve good grades in comparison with other European countries?
- There is too much rote learning.
- What about extra-classes?
- In the Irish system it is common to attend extra-classes even on saturday.
- In Ireland there are less extra-scholar activities such as sports or music.
